Our week of school..

This week Daddy was out-of-town and we stayed super busy as always with school and our extras.  In geography,we started learning about Canada.  We learned about the Inuit people, the different animals, languages, etc. of the country.  Our first art project was carving different things out of soap (the Inuit people usually carved animals they hunted or something from an old tale that was told to them). I forgot to take pics of this but they did turn out pretty good.

Our next project was ice sculptures.  Since some of these people in northern Canada live in Igloos we decided to try our hand at sculpting things out of ice.  Ours look like a bunch of popsicle formations but regardless the kids had fun.

Madelyn has joined a group called Keepers of the Faith.  It is similar to Girl Scouts in which they have to different projects to earn badges to put on their sash.  On Wednesday, the kids picked several apples from our very own apple tree in the backyard and that evening we baked a homemade apple pie. We threw some math in there and partially fulfilled a credit towards her earning a badge..gotta love two-for-ones:)

Thursday, we went on a field trip to Castlewood Canyon.  This was our first field trip with our homeschool group here and I must say we had a great time.  The volunteers at the State Park discussed with the kids about the various animal skins and skulls from the area around there which the kids were able to touch.  After the talk we headed out for a short hike around the canyon.  The trip ended with a picnic and self-guided hikes around the pavillion.  This will definitely be a place we take Dad back to hike.

Like I said we were real busy all week..jk, we actually were but I loved the cucumbers

Ice sculptures

It was more difficult to get them to stay how they wanted than the instructions suggested

Finished popsicle, I mean ice sculpture
